Better Handwriting

Training your hand and eyes to write is like training yourself to play basketball–both take a little practice.  And with a little practice you can see great improvement.  Try these few small exercises for a few minutes.  You should see immediate improvement in your handwriting.  More exercises are listed in the book as well as ways to create each letter with the fewest strokes.

When your hand is cramping, try doing a few of these to ease the tiny muscles in your fingers and hands.  It will also help to change the position of the pencil in your hand.  Try the one below.

This information is contained in the book So…Teach Them to Read & Write…Easily.

Interesting information:

  • If your letters are fat then your thumb is stronger than your fingers.
  • If your letters are tall and spiky then your fingers are stronger than your thumb.
  • If your writing is tiny, then your hands are crampy with less blood flow–very likely you need to hold your pencil differently. Try the pencil holding position below and lengthen the grip of your fingers by straightening them as much as possible while you hold the pencil.
  • If your ring finger is longer than your index finger then you very likely write with your fingers all smooshed together and have finger cramps.  Try the pencil holding position below.
